At least it is animated. We have one where a young girl lies by the side of the road. There is blood seeping from her mouth and ear, her legs and arm are bent at an impossible angle, she is grey, possibly dead. Then the film goes backward; the blood rolls back into her mouth and ear, arm and leg straighten with a dreadful click. She stands up and moves to the middle of the road, looks to the camera with eyes wide and staring. Too much, certainly, for small children, but gets the message across I think.
I know that ad Moannie and agree it's a bit ott. I can't get over how much things have changed in the last thirty years. Roads are busier, for sure. And children don't get out as much and learn how to cope on their own, but really... the Tufty Club. Actually, I have a confession, Nunhead Mum. I used to read 'Tufty' stories on the radio. It was a very long time ago!
I am of the era where Alvin Stardust, resplendent in leather told me how to cross, if his mate, Dave Prowse, wearing green and white lycra was busy in Star Wars !
That's not a good idea! Strangely enough, I think the 'Tufty' messages were probably more effective because they were so far-fetched. I'll have to post a clip of me reading one of the stories!
I've got a link to this road safety campagin on the sidebar of my blog, have you seen it? There are soem games and stuff on the site but are a bit too scary for N3S at the moment I think though they will be excellent reinforcement when he is a bit older.
Erm... I want to go to the ice-cream van... but I've got no-one to take me... Brilliant animation in the Tufty Club. I remember the posters in my classroom at school. Sx

ReplyDeleteAh, I remember the Tufty Club! The squirrel (Tufty?) was so lovely. I used to drive my family insane, teaching them how to cross the road safely.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Moannie, that advert is awful, i can't watch it.

ReplyDeleteHasn't got the same charm as Tufty has it.
ReplyDeleteI didn't like that green cross code either.
Gosh, so you used to be an actor? reading the tufty stories I mean
Well, no - not exactly. I was eight at the time, and it was on local radio. A tape still exists, I'm ashamed to say.
ReplyDeleteWhich local radio was this?
ReplyDeleteThe road safety ad. has changed with the times. Children today seem to be obsessed with playing football.
As opposed to buying ice-creams with mummy! (Radio Humberside, in it's very early days.)

ReplyDelete...and I remember some hedgehogs...which never seemed a great idea, as hedgehogs have no road sense whatsoever....
ReplyDeleteHa ha! I'd forgotten about Alvin Stardust, all coo-ca-choo and gloves and rings. I'll see if he's on You Tube.
ReplyDeleteCan't say I remember hedgehogs, NB. Perhaps, as you suggest, they thought better of that one!
Oh yes, I remember the tufty club. Wish my daughter would learn some road sense. She insists on standing behind cars when they are reversing!
ReplyDeleteCJ xx

I'll hold your hand, Scarlett!
ReplyDeleteNo, I haven't seen the links yet DJK, but I'm off to have a look. Thanks!
