Trivial Pursuit: the meme

Flushed with the success of three (yes THREE: Tara-Lara, Working Mum and Emma) new mo-meme entries (the 'my object' meme, invented by *ahem* yours truly) yesterday, I've given up my Lentern renunciation of all things 'meme-y' and renounced my former - disappointed - promise never again to invent one of the infernal things, and have come up with this.

The Trivial Pursuit, or 'Did You Know?' meme.

We all know stuff that other people don't. (And I'm not talking about that kind of stuff either!) No, common-or-garden facts that we've acquired via some long-forgotten conversation or immersion in some little-read literary volume. I know, for example, why Easter is a 'moveable feast' (it's all about the Pope, the Jewish festival of Passover, and the lunar calendar); I know why surgeons are called 'Mr' and not 'Dr' (surgeons weren't physicians, they were barbers. Incidentally 'Drs' - medical ones, at any rate - aren't often really 'Drs' either - they're granted the title as a courtesy); and I also know that the term 'meme' was coined by Richard Dawkins to describe an idea or an attitude that spreads not genetically, but socially ... Not a lot of people know that. And I'm not sure why I do, either.

But no matter. Such things are commonplace in the collective knowledge of each and every one of us. I'm not sure who said 'knowledge is power' (but I'm sure you know) but just think of the collective wisdom that is Twitter, Blogger, Wordpress and Typepad put together.

My meme idea is that we've all got something we can tell each other; something little known, something unique and something damned useful next time we play Trivial Pursuit together. So here's your chance to tell all.

To avoid the taint of failure I'm not tagging anyone this time. If you want to play, please have a go. That fact, that little snippet, that juicy morsel and that fascinating gobbet are all there, waiting for wider dissemination. I've started the ball rolling, both here and at Babyrambles where I'm 'Blogger on the Spot' today. Plenty of trivia there for everyone.

So go on. You know you want to.

Tell us something not a lot of people know.
