Things have been going rapidly downhill at school this year, which has been a factor in my resignation. There were four staff leaving at the end of term - one of whom had been at the school for seventeen years - and someone decided it would be a good idea to organise a little buffet, get some wine, and do a civilised farewell instead of rushing through the presentations during morning break. Nice idea! And by all accounts, the canteen did a lovely buffet. The only problem was - nobody invited any of the leavers. No-one's quite sure how it happened, but it's typical of the communication breakdown that's been plaguing us since last September. One of the four managed to make the do by accident; another found out about it as he was leaving school on Monday for a medical appointment; one of the departing teachers didn't even work on Monday and I left as usual at four o'clock to pick up Sally. The phrase 'piss-up' and 'brewery' comes to mind. Thankfully my own 'do', so-to-speak, was better organised and we managed not only the piss-up but a tour of Bateman's brewery as well.
